Claremont School Board Member Vacancy Process

Phase 1: Becoming a Candidate

  1. A School Board vacancy shall be announced at the first regularly scheduled Board meeting following the submission of a letter of resignation to the Chair, in accordance with RSA 671:33.

  2. Any registered voter of Claremont, NH and is not a salaried employee of the Claremont School District shall be eligible to seek appointment. Salaried positions shall include, but are not limited to, the following: teacher, custodian, administrator, secretary, school bus driver (if paid by the district), school lunch worker and teacher’s aide.

  3. A candidate must submit a Letter of Intent, not exceeding 250 words, stating the candidate’s interest for seeking appointment.

  4. The Letter of Intent shall be delivered to the SAU 6 Office no later than 3:30 p.m. on the MondaySeptember 15,2025.

  5. Letters of Intent shall be included in the Board packet for that meeting and made available to the public in accordance with RSA 91-A.

  6. The names of candidates shall be read aloud at the September 17, 2025 board meeting.

  7. A list of questions from the Board shall be provided in writing to all candidates no later than 5:00 p.m. on the Friday, September 19, 2025 following their announcement of intent to seek appointment



Phase 2: Nominations

  1. Candidate presentations shall occur at a properly posted special meeting held on the Wednesday following the public announcement of candidates, unless a quorum of the Board is unable to attend (per RSA 91-A:2).

  2. Each candidate shall be allotted five (5) minutes to present prepared responses to the questions provided by the Board.

  3. Following candidate presentations, the Board may ask questions of the candidates.
    After questions, any Board member may nominate a candidate.
    A candidate shall become a Nominee upon receiving a majority affirmative (“Yes”)  of board members present and voting.



Phase 3: Appointment of New Member

  1. Upon the conclusion of nominations, any Board member may move to appoint a nominee

  2. A nominee shall be appointed to the Board upon receiving a majority affirmative (“Yes”) v of board members present and voting, consistent with RSA 671:33.


  3. If no appointment is made, the following procedures may be invoked:
     a. The Chair may call for new nominations.
     b. Nominees may voluntarily withdraw.
     c. The Board may request new candidates from the community.
     d. Consideration of candidates and nominees shall continue at the next regularly  scheduled Board meeting.



Special Circumstances

The timeline outlined in this policy may only be compressed when necessary to ensure that a quorum of the Board can be convened at the next regularly scheduled meeting, in accordance with RSA 42:1-a.



Flow of Appointment Process

  1. Resignation submitted → Vacancy announced at next regularly scheduled Board meeting (RSA 671:33).

  2. Letters of Intent submitted → To SAU 6 Office by 3:30 p.m. Monday, September 15,2025.

  3. Board packet prepared → Letters distributed to Board and public in compliance with RSA 91-A.

  4. Public announcement of candidates → Names read at Board meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 2025.

  5. Questions provided to candidates → In writing by 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 19, 2025 following candidate announcement.

  6. Special meeting (Wednesday, September 24, 2025) → Candidates present responses (5 minutes each); Board may ask questions (RSA 91-A:2).

  7. Nominations made → Board members nominate candidates.

  8. Nominee vote → Candidate becomes nominee with majority “Yes” vote.

  9. Appointment → Board votes to appoint a nominee by majority “Yes” vote (RSA 671:33).

  10. If no appointment → Chair may reopen nominations, nominees may withdraw, new candidates may be sought, and process continues at the next regular me
